This virtual event happens every tuesday and gave me the opportunity to join some of the events and hear from subject matter experts on the topics discussed. I learned to understand the different issues and be aware of them as I wasn't too aware of some of the issues that were brought up. The panelists would always give a very profound and detailed solution and providing great takeaways after every meeting that I plan to use post graduation.
Women's Equality Day
In this TTR virtual event we heard from Nashira Williams, the Director at Women's Center talk about the progression of women in many fields and their impact in our society while still facing oppression. We heard from many different stories, about women pushing through their own struggles but also lifting other women as they go by opening nonprofits, and other initiatives. They talked about how FIU also played an impact in their lives and diversity the university has. I really enjoying hearing their stories and highlighted to me the reason why I love my university, FIU is very inclusive and brings a lot of opportunities for its students. Not only that but FIU is very inclusive and diverse which helps us see the world different and more accepting.
Climate and Health Equity
During this discussion we talked about climate change, specially in Miami, and Miami Beach. The speaker shared with us how the city of Miami Beach is flooding every year more and more. Climate change is drastically affecting the lives of those who live in the shores on the beach and how it will keep flooding more streets. The speaker presented us with different ways to do our part to help slow this down and also some of the initiatives that FIu and the city of Miami Beach are working together in. Research shows how some areas should start being consider to relocate before there is a total damage due to the strong rains and tropical hurricanes that affect that region.
