A District of Columbia and Azerbaijan journey!
I joined the International Buddy Program after having a great experience with Paper Planes. IBP is a program that the university matches you with an incoming student (freshman) that is looking to move to the united states and need someone to help them transition and adapt to this change. While participating in this program, I have learned a lot from Bahruz who is the student I was paired with. I live in the District of Columbia and Bahruz lives in Azerbaijan, a country located between europe and asia. We chat weekly, and check in on each other. We talk about current events in our cities and anything that is fun and educational too. We decided that we could look into some learning platforms so he can start sharpening his skills and be ready to adapt to the way our society in the united states is. Also, building his resume with his past experiences so he can land an internship by next year. This experience has made open up my eyes more and more to bring higher education to remote parts of the world where education and resources is limited or the education system is not properly funded.
Global Tutor
I had the wonderful opportunity to volunteer as a global tutor and teach english to someone that lives in Syria. As a tutor in Paper Airplanes’ English Program, I completed a 3-4 hour new tutor training at the start of the Fall 2019 semester and worked one-on-one with a student via video-conferencing. I spent my weekends during that semester tutoring and spending additional time preparing lesson plans and checking in between sessions. I enjoyed this experience and still stay in touch with mohammed who is the person I was matched with. He is a bright student and also a loving husband and father. He introduced me to his family, and would tell how some days it was hard for him to focus because there were riots or missiles striking outside of his house since his country is in war. This was a life changing because it showed me how much students outside of the united states have all the willingness to keep moving forward despite their circumstances and how I was able to play a small part in their education.
